The Zero to Three Diagnostic Classification System
The Zero to Three Diagnostic Classification system was formulated in 1994 by a taskforce of professionals in the field of infant mental health to fulfill the need identified in the 1980’s for a classification system that would “… take into account the rapid pace of development in the early years, the importance of the child’s early relationships, individual differences among children, and the impact of the care giving environment on children’s health and development.” (The Zero to Three Revision Task Force, 2005). Revisions to the Zero to Three Diagnostic Classification manual (DC-03R) were published in 2005 to reflect new research and provide more specificity and clarity of the criteria. The classification system is not meant to replace the DSM-IV, but to provide criteria not found elsewhere to assist in the psychological diagnosis of the infant and early childhood population. The DSM-IV criteria can be reliably used to guide diagnoses in children under 3 for autism and pervasive developmental disorder, but researchers have argued that the system lacks developmentally sensitive constructs and parameters and does not address parental and environmental variables that are critical to the identification of psychological issues in children (Evangelista, N., 2004). The DC-03R manual can be used in conjunction with the DSM-IV to provide a more inclusive frame of reference for the infant mental health practitioner.
