Understanding Infant Mental Health-Introduction
Introduction Research has substantiated that the first 3 years of life are crucial in a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with issues related to mental health, developmental delay, and behavioral issues and these are being identified at an earlier age. Despite the growing research substantiating that early intervention can mitigate mental health and developmental issues; there is still a lack of formal education and professional training in the area of infant mental health. Traditionally focus has been placed on intervention with the school aged population rather than prevention and a focus on a system of care to promote early detection and intervention of mental health and related issues. Infant mental health outcomes are optimal in the first three years of life. By the time a child enters the school system, an issue may be too pervasive for interventions to provide maximum benefit. Infant mental health is an area that spans across all settings and disciplines. The topic of infant mental health is important for anyone who works with children. Infant mental health does not just affect an individual; it affects the family of the infant or child as well as all the systems involved with that family.
